Complex Care at Home

Full-service, specialised home care for people with serious or long-term health problems

Support that focuses on the person for a better quality of life
For people with complicated medical conditions, getting care at home can be safer, more respectful, and more comforting than going to the hospital or a nursing home. Complex homecare allows individuals to stay in familiar surroundings while receiving highly specialised clinical support from trained carers and nurses.

What is care that is complex care?

Complex care is specialised, person-centred help for people with long-term, chronic, or life-threatening health problems who need more medical attention than regular home care can provide. This kind of care might include advanced nursing tasks, the use of medical equipment, and regular visits from healthcare workers.
People who need complex care may have neurological disorders, spinal or brain injuries, degenerative conditions, respiratory needs, or need medical devices like feeding tubes, catheters, or ventilators.
The goal of complex care at home is to help people live as independently as possible while still having a safe, dignified, and meaningful life in the comfort of their homes.
Some people call it continuing care, long-term care, or nurse-led home care.

Who Is Complex Care at Home For?

Complex care at home is designed for individuals with ongoing medical needs that require specialist monitoring, advanced personal care, and clinical intervention. These may include:

  • Neurological disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease)

  • Brain or spinal cord injury

  • Trauma to the bones or recovery after surgery

  • Cerebral palsy and lifelong disability

  • Conditions that get worse over time or those that  affect thinking

  • Lung problems that need help from a ventilator

  • Long-term nutritional support (PEG or NG feeding)

  • Taking care of the bowel, catheter, or stoma.

  • Situations that need tracheostomy care.

Complex care allows people to stay at home while getting the same level of professional care they would get in a hospital, hospice, or care facility. The added benefits are comfort, familiarity, and emotional stability.

Paying for complex care

Many individuals receiving complex care may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) — a funding scheme provided by the NHS for those whose primary need is health-based.
The local Integrated Care Board (ICB) decides who is eligible, and if they are, the NHS pays for all of their care bills, whether it is care at home or in a hospital. Complex care funding may also apply to individuals receiving palliative or end-of-life support, or those with severe, ongoing conditions requiring intensive intervention.
If you need help, Rainbows Care LTD can help you get the money you need and work with healthcare professionals during the assessment.
